Silver Spring, Md. – Today, U.S .Election Assistance Commission Chairman Thomas Hicks and Vice Chair Christy McCormick issued this statement following the death of President George H.W. Bush:

“At his 1989 inauguration, President Bush reminded us that ‘free elections and the exercise of free will unhampered by the state’ sustain our freedom. From his fierce defense of free democracy around the world to his signing of landmark legislation here at home, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, President Bush knew that democracy can only flourish when citizens have the ability to make their voices heard without barriers.

“President Bush’s legacy is a clarion call for all Americans. It is a poignant reminder that the future of our democracy and the heart of our freedom lies in our ability to exercise our rights, especially the essential right to vote. Today we mark the passing of a statesman who defended that right for citizens across the globe, and we will honor his memory by continuing to stand with those who carry on that work.”
